Ring around about a blocked DPF and you’ll be quoted four quite different things: a bottle of additive, on-car DPF cleaning, a removal-and-bake, or a replacement filter. The prices run from twenty dollars to several thousand, which understandably makes people suspect somebody is having them on.

They aren’t the same job. Here’s what each one actually does.

Do DPF additives and fuel treatments work?

A fuel-borne catalyst lowers the temperature at which soot combusts, making regeneration easier for the ECU to achieve. On a mildly loaded filter in an otherwise healthy vehicle, that can genuinely help.

What it won’t do is clear a filter that has already passed the point where the ECU refuses to regenerate. If the vehicle is in limp mode, a bottle of additive isn’t going to retrieve it. It also does nothing at all for ash loading.

Reasonable as maintenance. Not a repair.

What on-car DPF cleaning actually does

The filter stays on the vehicle. Cleaning solution is introduced directly into it — typically through the differential pressure sensor ports or an existing sensor boss — where it breaks down accumulated soot and deposits, which are then flushed and burnt out through a controlled regeneration.

The advantage is downtime and cost. No exhaust dismantling means no seized studs, no damaged gaskets, no disturbed sensor wiring, and no snapped fasteners on a system that’s spent years at temperature. On vehicles where the filter is buried, removal alone can run to several hours of labour before anyone has cleaned anything. And because it’s mobile, the vehicle never leaves your yard.

The limitation is that on-car DPF cleaning is a soot-and-deposit process. It’s highly effective at that, and restores flow on the substantial majority of blocked filters. What it won’t do is strip heavy ash out of a filter near the end of its service life.

Off-car DPF cleaning: when removal is worth it

The filter comes off and goes through a bench process — pressurised aqueous cleaning, thermal treatment, or both — usually with flow testing before and after.

For a genuinely ash-saturated filter, that’s more thorough. The trade-off is everything you avoid by staying on-car: removal labour, collateral damage during dismantling, gasket and sensor costs, and the vehicle off the road for days rather than hours. On a ute earning money daily, that downtime is frequently the biggest cost in the job.

When a DPF needs replacing instead

Sometimes it’s the honest answer. If the substrate is cracked, melted from a runaway regeneration, or has collapsed internally, no cleaning process will bring it back. Anyone who tells you they can clean a cracked substrate is selling you a disappointment.

How to tell which DPF cleaning method you need

This is the part that gets skipped, and it’s the part that decides everything.

The starting point is live data, not a price list. Differential pressure across the filter at idle and under load. Calculated soot load against measured. Exhaust gas temperatures either side. And the regeneration history stored in the ECU — how many attempts, how many completed, how many aborted and why.

That data tells you whether you have a filter loaded with soot that will clean beautifully, one that’s ash-heavy and needs bench treatment, or one that’s perfectly serviceable and being blocked by something upstream.

That last case is more common than people expect. A stuck-open EGR, a leaking injector, a boost leak, a failed exhaust temperature sensor or a turbo passing oil will all load a filter faster than it can clear. Clean the filter, leave the cause, and it keeps blocking.

Which option is right for your vehicle

For most blocked filters on an otherwise healthy vehicle, on-car DPF cleaning solves it in a fraction of the time and cost, without disturbing an exhaust that was perfectly happy where it was.

For a filter at the end of a long life and heavily ash-loaded, off-car is the better call — and we’ll tell you that rather than take your money for a process that won’t deliver.

For a filter that keeps blocking, the filter isn’t the problem, and cleaning it again isn’t the answer.
